BUMU was founded in 2014 when a group of local musicians, dancers and artists living in the suburbs of Kampala, Uganda met together in the midst of rising political violence and ethnic tensions. These artists decided to form a group centered around the concept of BUMU which means unity in Luganda. The group was created with the goal of uniting people together regardless of their ethnic or political background, we soon began performing traditional Ugandan music and dance routines in schools, universities and churches across our community where we spread our message of national and inter-ethnic harmony and peace. Since the foundation of our group, many of our members have traveled across the world and found similar states of conflict regardless of what part of the world they are in. For that reason we have decided to take our platform of BUMU to the global stage and branch out from our home town to begin performing around the world. Today we have amassed an international following and continue to unite people across the world through a shared enjoyment and respect of traditional African drumming and dance.
BUMU means unity. We believe that everybody needs peace and unity. This is why we formed this group because we saw that there was disunity all over the globe. So we come with the message of uniting people through music, dance and drumming and through culture. Along way back in Africa we used to have cultural institutions which used to teach and educate people about values and culture so when the generations went changing into politics, people started to go deep into politics and forget about their values and culture. Many cultural institutions were destroyed, cultural sites were demolished, people started behaving the way they wanted, hating one another, killing one another because of politics. But way back, people were united together during the time where there were cultural institutions and education. So the word Bumu means unity, this is why we preach peace, unity, through culture and education all over the globe.
